Night Guards and Bruxism

A custom guard protects your teeth from grinding and clenching. It is made from a digital scan of your own bite rather than a tray of impression material.

Night Guards and Bruxism at Montville Center for Dentistry

What it is

Grinding and clenching happen mostly at night, and most people do not know they are doing it. The signs show up on the teeth as flattened edges, small cracks, and restorations that keep failing.

A night guard does not stop the habit. It takes the wear instead of your teeth, and it often eases the jaw soreness and morning headaches that come with clenching.

The guard is made to your bite. A shop bought version is bulkier, fits loosely, and can change how your teeth meet.

Who it is for

  • You wake with a sore jaw or a headache.
  • Your partner has heard you grinding at night.
  • Teeth look flattened or chipped at the edges.
  • Fillings or crowns keep breaking.
  • You have had cosmetic work you want to protect.

What to expect

  1. Assessment

We look at wear patterns, the muscles, and the joint, and ask about your sleep and stress.

  2. Digital scan

A scanner captures your bite in a few minutes. No impression trays are needed.

  3. Fitting

The guard is fitted and adjusted in person until it seats comfortably and your bite feels even.

  4. Follow up

We check the guard at your regular visits and look for signs that the grinding is continuing.

Questions we hear most

It takes some getting used to. Most people adapt with consistent wear, and we adjust the fit if it is bothering you.

A boil and bite guard is bulky and loose, and a poorly fitting guard can shift how your teeth meet.

Rinse and brush it without toothpaste, then let it dry. We go through the routine when you collect it.

No. It protects your teeth from the effects. Managing the cause is a separate conversation and we are happy to have it.

Talk it through with a dentist before you commit to anything.

Bring your questions to a consultation. We will explain what we see and what the options are, and nothing gets booked until you decide it should.
