Restorative

Extractions

When a tooth cannot be saved, removing it carefully and planning what comes next matters just as much as the extraction itself.

Extractions at Montville Center for Dentistry

What it is

An extraction is the removal of a tooth that is too damaged, too decayed, or too loose to keep. It is a last option, and we will always tell you if there is a realistic way to save the tooth instead.

Wisdom teeth are a separate category. They are removed when they are causing pain, crowding, repeated infection, or damage to the tooth in front, and we assess that with imaging.

Before the tooth comes out we talk about the gap. Whether you want an implant, a bridge, a denture, or nothing at all, planning early makes the next step simpler.

Who it is for

  • A tooth is broken beyond repair.
  • Decay has gone too far to restore.
  • A wisdom tooth is causing pain or repeated infection.
  • Gum disease has left a tooth loose.
  • A tooth is blocking planned orthodontic movement.

What to expect

  1. Assessment and imaging

We confirm the tooth cannot be saved and check the roots and surrounding structures on an image.

  2. Discussing the gap

Before removal we go through the replacement options so you are not deciding afterwards under pressure.

  3. The extraction

The area is fully numbed and the tooth is removed. You should feel pressure rather than sharpness.

  4. Aftercare

Written instructions, a follow up if you need one, and a number to call if anything concerns you.

Questions we hear most

Not always, and it depends on where it was. Back teeth affect chewing and neighbouring teeth can drift, so we talk it through.

Sometimes, particularly in an emergency. Call the office and describe what is happening.

Most extractions are done with local anaesthetic while you are awake. Tell us if you are anxious and we will discuss options.

Follow the written aftercare closely, especially in the first day. If something does not feel right, call us rather than waiting.

Talk it through with a dentist before you commit to anything.

Bring your questions to a consultation. We will explain what we see and what the options are, and nothing gets booked until you decide it should.
